Civil War - Lt. John Grimball and the CSS Shenandoah

NavGridv01 03One of the most famous Confederate raiders of the war was unquestionably the CSS Shenandoah. The Shenandoah was the first and only ship to circumnavigate the globe carrying the Confederate Flag. Her crew was also the last Confederate military unit to fire hostile shots and to surrender, albeit to the British at Liverpool.

The Shenandoah literally wreaked havoc among Union commercial shipping. She attacked federal ships anywhere and everywhere including such locales as the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), the Indian Ocean, Cape Horn (tip of South America) and of course the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Shenandoah was so efficient that she once captured / sank seven Union whalers in an eleven hour span!

On board for much of this havoc was South Carolina native Lt. John Grimball. The Museum is extremely fortunate to possess several personal items of Grimball including his officer's sash, his naval sword belt complete with an officer's sword and scabbard, and his model 1860 Colt Army Revolver. The true gem, however, is the Confederate belt buckle on Grimball's navy sword belt. Made in England, this belt buckle is extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors as well as other museums.
